Summary

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, immune / mediated antigen disease wich affects children and adults. It is characterized by an eosinophilic infiltration of esophageal epithelium. The esophageal dysfunction symptoms include dysphagia, food impaction as well as symptoms similar to gastroesophageal reflux disease. Endoscopic examination reveals mucosal friability, presence of ring formations or corrugated mucosa, longitudinal grooves, whitish plaques and decreased caliber esophagus. Histological findings of> 15 eosinophils by high power field is the hallmark of diagnosis of EoE. An elimination diet, PPI, topical or in severe cases, systemic corticosteroids in addition to endoscopic dilation are part of the therapeutic arsenal of this disease.
