Summary

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are considered safe drugs. However, some considerations have been done for their prolonged use. It was observed that the chronic use of PPIs increases the incidence of enteric infections, due to the decrease in the bactericidal effect of acid secretion on the bacterial flora. Moreover, it is discussed, for example, interference of PPIs in patients using clopidogrel, its effects on the metabolism of calcium, vitamin D, iron and magnesium absorption and its effects on the individual. Many of these aspects are still objects of controversy because it is not clear whether these observations are the result of a causal or casual relationship, given the frequency with which the population uses these medications.
