Summary

A transversal study with 26 patients between 20-60 years (25 women and 1 man; 42 years ±13) with autoimmune thyroid disease was developed to determine the prevalence of mitral valve prolapse in patients with autoimmune thyroid diseases.

Criteria of exclusion: previous damage in cardiac valves and use of drugs that intervene with the thyroid function. The thyroid avaliation consisted of the dosage of the free-tiroxina (T4L),thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), antibodies antithyroperoxidase (anti-TPO) and antithyroglobulin (anti-Tg). The cardiovascular evaluation was made through the ecocardiograma with doppler.

The prevalence of prolapse of the mitral valve was of 23%. Serum levels of T4L, TSH, anti-TPO and anti-Tg had been express in medium and amplitude:T4L:1,355 ng/dl (0.51-8.51 ng/dl); TSH: 1,78 mcUI/mL (0,03-48mcUI/mL); anti-TPO:571,5 IU/ml (74,5-1000) and anti-Tg:47,3I U/ml (20-3000).
The prevalence of prolapse of the mitral valve in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease was superior (23%) to the one of the population in general (5-10%). Adicional studies must have made with a bigger number of pacients and the evaluation of thyroid autoimmunity in patients with mitral valve prolapse in order to determine this association.
